Nepal, it's time to Ratify the Migrant Workers Convention!
Twenty years have passed since the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Migrant Workers and their Families was first signed in 1990. To mark the 20th anniversary year of its adoption by the UN general assembly on 18 December 1990, a global campaign has been launched by the International Steering Committee (Network of UN agencies and organizations, including, among the others, OHCHR, Migrant Forum Asia (MFA), Amnesty International (AI), International Labor Organization (ILO), International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), etc.) to challenge countries to end abuses and exploitation of migrants by protecting their human rights . To date, convention has been ratified by 42 states and signed by another 16. Moreover, a petition to call European ratification, supported by 57 members of the European Parliament
Unfortunately, Nepal is not among the signatories states. WOREC, Youth Action and PNCC have launched a National campaign, the Migrants Month Campaign, to raise awareness on migration issues and to call the Nepali government to act immediately to end widespread human rights violations suffered daily by Nepali migrants around the world, by ratifying this fundamental international human rights instrument.
Specific Objectives:
1.To create public awareness about safe migration and the rights of migrant workers
2. To advocate and create pressure among government agencies and political leaders for the ratification of the UN convention on the rights of migrant workers
3. To create pressure among concerned stakeholders in increased responsibilities for the protection and promotion of migrants’ rights
4. To inform and create partnerships with stakeholders including civil society organizations and media to recognize and establish the rights of migrant workers as human rights.
