29th November is celebrated as International Women Human Rights Defenders around the world science 2005. Eighth international WHRD Day was celebrated organizing a mass rally on the presence of around 500 Women Human Rights Defenders who represented from five development regions. Rally was coordinated by National alliance for Human Rights Defenders and Bhaktapur, Kathamandu and Lalitpur district network. The defenders represented diverse groups working on complex and complicated issues such as disability, sexuality, dalits, informal settlements, land rights, Badi rights, indigenous rights, muslims, sexual minorities, political representation etc. The defenders claimed that defenders working on sexuality, dowry, dalits and informal settlements face grave degree of human rights violations.
The collective voices of the defenders raised several slogans such as : a) Ensure justice for all b) Ensure security of Women Human Rights Defenders, c) Consensus among political parties for peace and constitution d) We can end Violence Against Women, e) Solidarity to Women’s movement in Nepal, and f) Implement recommendations of Universal Period Review on Women Human Rights defenders. The Defenders also used the space to recognize and praise their work, and remembered the commitment and passion of those defenders who risked their lives to defend human rights.
Dr. Renu Rajbhandari president of NAWHRD delivered her view after the rally demanding respect and security of WHRD who are defending against Violence against women. Representative of different district networks expressed their view on WHRD security.
