Full Bench of the Supreme Court of Nepal, headed by Chief Justice Kalyan Shrestha and Justice Devendra Gopal Shrestha, on February 4, 2016 pronounced directive order to the government to make a specific law in the favor of writ petition filed by Women’s Rehabilitation Center (WOREC). The writ petition (070-WO-0214) was filed on Bhadra 31, 2070, demanding for the protection of women and girls, who are survivors of rape, and their children thus born.
The legal system of Nepal lacks protective mechanism for victims of rape, especially adolescent girls. They are devoid of any kind of rescue mechanism, medical support, safe shelter support and rehabilitation from the side of the government. As a result, the organization had been continuously demanding for a separate law to rescue the rape victims and provide them with necessary protection mechanisms.
WOREC has long been lobbying and advocating for the protection and promotion of women human rights. As per the data of violence against women documented by the organization of past six months, 106 women have been a victim of rape and six of mass rape. With no protection mechanism from the side of government, many young girls and women are suffering from various problems and are vulnerable to many other forms of violence.
